miwok | lairds landing
from jack mason’s “earthquake bay” (chapter 2 – the miwok, a sorry exodus):
“the primitive indian,” writes robert heizer, “knew that he had been born, and would probably die, in a village situated on a certain stream; and that this stream, or a portion of it, and all the streams flowing into it, and all the land on or between those creeks, belonged to his people.”
this summer i have had the great opportunity to photograph perhaps one of the last sites where the coast miwok tribe had lived, and the point reyes light has released the first article of a three-part series covering the miwok homestead history on laird’s landing. this site was later survived and inhabited by the late artist clayton lewis. here is first installment by writer and reporter jacoba charles.
